TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY:

SPARK BIOMEDICAL INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE

(3RD YEAR PhD STUDENTS)

The Stanford SPARK program was established ten years ago, with the goal of advancing new biomedical research discoveries into promising new treatments for patients. Since its founding, SPARK has advanced scores of new diagnostics and drugs to the clinic and commercial sectors and educated hundreds of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students on the translational process.

Each year the Monash Institute of Medical Engineering (MIME) seeks nominations, selects and supports two PhD students in the late stages of candidature (3rd year) to attend the Stanford SPARK Biomedical Innovation and Entrepreneurship Workshop. This year it is being held at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan from July 30 to August 10th 2017. Attendees come from Universities and SPARK programs around the world so aside from the training opportunity a great chance to increase your global network.

The goal of the course is to train students to develop skills in design thinking, brainstorming, product development and commercialisation for unmet medical needs and to become more creative, innovative and savvy in translational research in the Biomedical Sciences and Medical Technologies.

We expect that as a result of attendance and participation, students will gain confidence in their ability to come up with new ideas for novel medical health products and start to develop the ability to become biomedical entrepreneurs.

If you would like to apply, please forward a proposal outlining why you think we should select you to attend (1/2 page) and 3 or 4 page CV outlining your achievements to date.

Awardees will be required to provide a short trip report with content suitable for our website or newsletter when they return.

We need to nominate people fairly quickly so please apply by COB Friday the 9th of June. Applications will be accepted by email only. Please contact Prof. Laurence Meagher, Deputy Director of MIME (Laurence.meagher@monash.edu) directly if you would like to apply. No applications will be accepted after the cut off date and time.

Some examples of relevant travel include but are not limited to opportunities to carry out collaborative work in national or international laboratories, presentation at high profile national or international conferences, training (new techniques or short courses) or access to equipment. The maximum award is $2500.

If you would like to apply, please forward a proposal outlining why you are requesting travel support, the likely benefits to your research, a budget outlining costs and 2 page CV outlining your achievements to date.
